■学生寮の学生たちを世話する警備員
今、注目を集めているのはアメリカ・ロードアイランド州にある、プロビデンス・カレッジに通う学生たちだ。
彼らは隣接している学生寮「レイモンド・ホール」に暮らしているが、そこで夜間警備員をしている、ナイジェリア出身のジェームス・モガジさんのことが気がかりだった。
ジェームスさんはとても気さくなうえ、仕事の疲れなどは一切見せない。夜中だろうと、常に笑顔で学生たちの世話をしてくれるそうだ。

■11年間家族に会えず
そんなジェームスさんは、金銭面の問題で11年間まったく母国に帰れておらず、家族とも顔を合わせていない。
そこで1年生のブランドン・ライチャートさんは今年2月、クラウドファンディングにページを開設した。
「いつも親切にしてくれるナイジェリア出身の警備員さんに、帰国させてあげたい。家族と会わせてあげたいのです」と綴り、交通費をはじめ現地での食費や宿泊費への寄付を呼び掛けた。

■母国へのフライトをプレゼント
その活動は、カレッジ内の学生だけでなく世間の人々にも広まり、開設からわずか24時間で3,000ドル（日本円にして約45万円）を調達。最終的には3万ドル（約450万円）を集めることに成功した。
一部を航空チケットに替え、ついにブランドンさんは協力してくれた仲間とともに、ジェームスさんのオフィスへ。「いつも僕たちに良くしてくれるあなたに、少しでも恩返しがしたかった」と活動を報告し、すべてを手渡した。

■「最も優しく家族のような存在」
学生からの予期せぬプレゼントに、嬉しさのあまり泣き崩れてしまったジェームスさん。いくら感謝してもしきないといった様子だったそうだ。
ジェームスさんは、卒業式を終え夏休みに入った6月の帰国を予定。ブランドンさんは「彼はこれまで会った人のなかで、最も優しく、僕たちにとっては家族のように大切な存在です」と明かしている。
その様子を映したTikTokの動画は、ブランドンさんの両親の友人によりシェアされ、感動と称賛の声が多数寄せられている。
